How do I give ChatGPT access to Git without giving it my whole computer?
The safer pattern is not broad filesystem access. It is an explicit repository boundary, protected-file filtering, read-only code access, and a separate human approval step for changes.
The risk with broad local access
A development machine can contain credentials, environment files, unrelated repositories, personal data, signing material, and other sensitive files. An AI coding workflow should not need blanket filesystem authority just to help with one project.
Use a repository-specific boundary
Secure Git Bridge lets the developer select the local Git repository that should be available to the AI connection. The bridge exposes controlled repository capabilities rather than granting the AI unrestricted authority over the Mac.
Block protected files before AI access
Repository approval does not mean every file should be readable. Protected-file rules can deny sensitive files and paths such as environment files, keys, and credentials.
Separate reading from writing
Secure Git Bridge allows approved code to be inspected through the bridge, but AI-generated code changes are presented as patch proposals for human review. Generating a patch is not the same authority as applying it.
Keep repositories isolated
When multiple repositories are connected, Secure Git Bridge keeps repository authority separate instead of combining them into one broad workspace permission. Conversation-to-repository binding is explicit.
Understand the data flow
Secure Git Bridge's licensing and billing control plane is not a source-code hosting service. Content approved for an AI interaction can be sent to the AI provider you choose. Review that provider's privacy and data-use terms for the AI side of the connection.
